- Youth, 19, Drowns at Bedford's Lake of Three Fires
Stanley Eugene Crippen, of 502½ Woodson, a 1974 graduate of Lafayette High School, drowned Saturday morning in Lake of Three Fires, four miles north of Bedford, Iowa.
The drowning occurred about 10 in 10 feet of water and the body was recovered by the life guard crew about 30 minutes later.
According to Larry Aldridge, park ranger, the beach had not yet opened for the day at the time of the tragedy and the lifeguards were not on duty.
Young Crippen was on an outing at the lake with a group from St. Joseph, according to information received from Bedford. Friends of the youth said he could not swim.
Born in St. Joseph, he had resided with Mr. and Mrs. Sid Thornton, route 2, most of his life. Since graduating, however, he had at the Woodson address and had been employed at the Johnson Feed Co., 3002 South 6th.
He is survived by his father, Marvin S. Crippen, Amazonia; his mother, Mrs. Darlene Welter Rose, De Kalb; four brothers, Marvin R., Robert J., Mark A. and Bryan Crippen, all of De Kalb; a sister, Miss Peggy Sue Crippen, St. Joseph; his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Welter, St.
Joseph; his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Homer Crippen, St. Joseph, and his great-grandfather, Everett Cline, Rushville.
Services will be Monday afternoon at 1:30 at the Colonial chapel, the Rev. Charles Hagee officiating. Interment will be in St. John's cemetery at Amazonia.
