    • PIONEER FARMER DIES

Samuel Balsiger Had Lived in Buchanan County for More Than Half a Century

Samuel Balsiger, a resident of Buchanan County for half a century and a well-known farmer, died at his home nine miles northeast of the city early yesterday morning.  Heart disease was the cause of death.

Mr. Balsiger was born in Switzerland May 23, 1824.  He came to the United States in 1850, settling in Ohio.  Two years later he removed with his family to Buchanan County.  He secured what is now known as the Balsiger farm from the government, cleared the land and made of it one of the best farms in the county.

He bought in the farms of his neighbors from time to time until at the time of his death he was the owner of several hundred acres.

Mr. Balsiger is survived by eleven children, all of whom are married.  There are four sons and seven daughters.  With the exception of Miss Louisa Balsiger, who lives in St. Louis, Miss Emma Balsiger, who lives in Horton, Kan., and Miss Mary Balsiger, who lives in Henry County, this state, the children reside in Buchanan County.
