[NOTE from Pam (12/2006): This is the family history which we have been attempting to document. I suspect that whom ever wrote his obituary used this for reference. Since many of William Caldwell's descendants remained in the Andrew Co area for some time and married into other families from the area, other people may find it helpful? ]

A GENEALOGY OF THE CALDWELL FAMILY
Savannah, Missouri
(Written about 1907)*

I, John Rice Caldwell, now in my 75th year, undertake to give the genealogy of our branch of the Caldwell family; yet I feel that in part it is only a legend, as we have so little recorded data. Our great grandfather, William Caldwell, was born and reared in Scotland. When a young man he went to Ireland to work in barley and wheat harvest and settled there permanently and here he married to a Miss Crawford in County Down. To this union were born six or seven children, vs. the eldest, John (my grandfather), James, Crawford, Nancy (who married Noble Beals), Sarah (married Rev. Rice) and one married James Edgar. The parents died in Ireland.

John, the eldest came over to America between the year 1798 and 1800 to select a new home for his orphan brothers and sisters. After he landed in America, he continued west in his search to Daniel Boone’s upper settlement on the Missouri River. After a time he returned east to Chillicothe, Ohio, then the State Capitol, then to the Atlantic Coast. There he took passage for Ireland, but the second day out of the Delaware River a British man-of-war vessel drove along side their ship and forcibly impressed all able bodied men, and grandfather being determined to become a citizen of Ohio, refused to take the oath of loyalty to the crown and therefore treated much like a prisoner; was not permitted to go on shore without a guard for over thirteen months, during which time the British ship cruised south to the coast of Old Mexico and participated in a naval battle with the Spanish at or near Vera Cruz. They then turned north to old Tampa Bay, Florida, then continued north to Halifax, Nova Scotia. There they landed to rest and recruit a few days.

For the time it appears they had forgotten John Caldwell. He went his way, never to return to the British vessel. Being a member of the Masonic Order he soon found friends and shelter, until the vessel left port. They made diligent search, but failed to find him. In a short time he took ship for home, under the name of John Crawford (his mother’s maiden name) an soon landed in Belfast, and then home.

The brothers and sisters then arranged and took shipping for the United States. The oldest son, having inherited all the property, payed the passage of all the family. My best information is that they landed at Baltimore-the date I cannot give. But in due time they settled in Ross County, Ohio, some twelve or fourteen miles southwest of Chillicothe, then the capital of the state.

Grandfather and Grandmother first met and were married in Ross County. Grandmother’s maiden name was Mary McClure, of Scottish descent, but born in York County, Penn. On the eighth of November 1780. She with her parents moved west in 1790, coming down the Ohio River on a rude raft, as was the custom then. They had to use great precaution on the trip because of savage Indians. They finally landed safe at the mouth of Licking Creek, Kentucky and made their way to the nearest military post, in quest of protection from the Indians. The first year in Kentucky they were protected by a fortified camp called a lockade. Then they removed to Ohio and settled in Ross County.

Grandmother and Grandfather were married December 24th, 1807. There they owned a farm on Paint Creek, Ohio. On this farm my father, William Caldwell, was born December 26th 1808, and I was born on the same farm, June 18th, 1832. My father was the oldest of six brothers (no sisters), John, James(born Oct 20, 1812 in Ross Co, Ohio), David, Crawford and Joseph. All are long since dead, but all except Joseph lived to a mature age, married and raised families.

Grandfather Caldwell died of Asiatic Cholera on July 27th, 1832. He was buried at Rocky Springs Church in the edge of Highland County, Ohio. He had sold his farm and was intending to remove to northeast Indiana. This delayed the family in removing until the year 1833. Grandmother, my father and mother, and the five brothers settled in Noble County, Indiana. They settled between where Ligonier and Wawaka have since been located.

My mother, Mary Pierson, was born near Cape May, New Jersey, Feb. 24th 1806. Her ancestry very early settlers on the Atlantic Coast; were of Scotish and Welch descent. Grandfather’s name was William Pierson, and Grandmother’s maiden name was Stites.

They moved from New Jersey to Ohio, and later to Indiana. My mother died February 22nd. My information is therefore quite limited as to my ancestry maternally. Our grandfather, John Caldwell enlisted and served as a soldier in the War of 1812 against Great Britain.

Father and mother were married July 26th, 1831. To this union were born four children. My two sisters died in infancy, one only brother, William Crawford was accidently killed in father’s saw mill at Rochester Missouri struck by a flying scantling August the 8th, in his 24th year. He was interred at Rochester, as was my wife, Sarah D; my oldest son William S. and my father’s mother, who died February 6th 1856. My mother, grandmother, and grandfather Pierson are interred at Springfield Cemetery, Noble County, Indiana.

Father married Elizabeth, second daughter of Collins M. Christie, in December 1843. To this marriage were born nine children, of who six are still living.

Father with his family removed from Indiana to Andrew County, Missouri in August 1849, and settled at Rochester buying mill property. He obtained a charter from the state and erected the first bridge across Platte River at Rochester (a toll bridge) and in 1861 his mills were burned by the rebels, and he entered the artillery service and later raised Company C, 12th Missouri Cavalry, of which he was Captain. In the year 1865, he was appointed clerk of the circuit court of Andrew County, and December 24th, 1885 he died from paralysis, and was buried December 26th being his 77th birthday. Father was interred in the cemetery at Savannah. He left a widow and seven children.

Uncle James and Uncle David Caldwell settled in Iowa before it was admitted as a state, and other relatives McClures and Edgars. Uncle Crawford settled in California where he died, and where his family still resides. Uncle John came to Andrew County, Missouri, and he and Aunt Margaret Caldwell, his wife, continued to reside near Rochester until their death, and are both interred in Rochester cemetery. Mother, Elizabeth Christie Caldwell was born in Ross County Ohio, March 22nd, 1822.

I trust my friends will pardon errors.
