ELDRIDGE - The name of Three Eldridges appear on the old early Virginia land records. Samuel Eldridge was one of the several persons who came to Virginia with Justinian Cooper, a prominent emigrant, who married Anne Harrison, widow of a James Harrison. She had been Anne Cliffe. Eldridge has probably come to Virginia when Justinian Cooper first came, so he must have arrived very early. By 1750 Samuel Eldridge was patenting land in Isle of WT county in his own name. Also a certain Hugh Eldridge and a Thomas Eldridge came about the same time. Other writers have claimed that the Samuel Eldridge was the ancestor but it may have been Thomas as well. Any assistance in regard to any ELDRIDGE's would be appreciated. Do you have any contacts or any idea where I can find another ELDRIDGE researcher who could possible help me with my family search? (If you did not see it) The Eldridge family of Overton County, Tennessee Among some of the important families who settled in Overton CO. TN and about who little has appeared in any of the records were three brothers names Sampson, John and Zachariah Eldridge. I also have a record of a divorce from the Legislative Acts of the first session of TN. showing Sampson Eldridge, of Overton Co., and his wife Franky, divorce act passed 12/03/1807. Does any one have any information on Sampson ELDRIDGE, his children of this marriage, or remarriage and any other children??? I have an Obadiah/Obed Eldridge that could be a child of Sampson Eldridge. Please any help will be appreciated! In connection with these three Eldridge brothers appears the name of John Cargill and Nelson Ray. The interesting thing about these three families is that they were all from Brynswick County, Virginia where they belonged to prominent old Virginia Families. The Eldridges seemed to flop back and forth between TN, KY and VA just like my Henson line did. You remember that those three states come together right there at the Cumberland Gap area. JEFFERSON, WATSON, PATTON, HOLLIS - I have always been told that Thomas Jefferson was an ancestor of mine. My GG grandfather was, in fact, Thomas Jefferson but not THE Thomas Jefferson, president of these United States. My THOMAS JEFFERSON was born in Amelia Co, Virginia, 6/6/1799. He married CHARLOTTE C. WATSON. He died 2/14/1880 in Marion Co, AR. Thomas had two other wives the second being NANCY MILLER PATTON and the third ELIZABETH CANNON HOLLIS. Thomas fathered 3 children, the second of which was my great grandfather, ROBERT BRECKENRIDGE JEFFERSON, BORN 9/25/1865 IN Morgan Co. Missouri. Robert married a woman who was, I believe, full Cherokee Indian, named, IDA JANE WOOD, on 3/28/1886 in Yellville, Marion Co. AR. Robert and Ida Jane bore 10 children. Their second and third children were twins, the first of which was my grandfather, named JOHN ALBERT JEFFERSON, born 9/5/1890 in Yellville, Marion Co, AR. John married MYRTLE MAY COWDREY on /5/8/1912, in Yellville, Marion Co, AR. John and Myrtle bore 8 children, the seventh being my mother, IDA BELLE MORRONE, nee JEFFERSON, born 9/9/25, Springfield, MO. My query is how do I go back farther to find out if my THOMAS JEFFERSON was related to THE Thomas Jefferson family, ie.uncle, cousin. I was told by my Grandfather that we were related to the same family as the president. Are there ways on the Internet to research this information? COLEMAN - I've been communicating with others interested in the Colemans of Amelia Co. I visited there this past year looking for clues as to whose William Coleman's ancestors were. I didn't make any headway at all. So far, I've encountered three different claims about where William came from. 1) Robert Coleman of Mobjack Bay, Gloucester Co. VA. William would be this Robert's grandson, i.e., the son of Robert's son, Joseph Coleman (m. Agnes Adleston). This claim was originally made in S. Bernard Coleman's book, "The Coleman Family Of Virginia." 2) William of Amelia is son of William of Charles City Co. VA who came there in 1656. Supposidly there were four brothers in Charles Co. at that time, Robert (got 813 acres of land from Lt. Col. Walter Chiles in Charles City Co. in 1852), Nicholas, Thomas and William. This is the view presented in J.P. Coleman's book, "The Robert Coleman Family, from Virginia to Texas." 3) William is son of a Robert Coleman of Henrico Co. I would appreciate any clues or data or thoughts you might have that could add to the on-going discussion. Hopefully, someday, the question of William's ancestry will be resolved conclusively. Daniel and Mary appear in the 1810 census of Jefferson Co. Ky. with a boy and two girls under the age of 10. His wife Mary was born in 1790. In 1817 they sold their land in the Louisville area and moved to Carlisle, Sullivan County, Indiana where they settled and reared a family of 10 children. George Davidson died in Jessamine County, Ky. and his oldest child, Richard, brought 5 infant brothers and sisters to Carlisle where they settled on an adjoining farm to Daniel Davidson and Mary Enochs Davidson. Daniel Davidson was my gr.gr. grandfather and I have been trying to sort out who his parents were for 37 years. The courthouse in Sullivan burned and the Davidson cemetery was destroyed. JOHNSON, HAWKINS - I am a descendant of Ro(w)land JOHNSON (b. 1758 in Amelia County) and his sister, Susan "Suckey" JOHNSON (b. 1760 possibly in Amelia County) as well as Joshua HAWKINS (b.1753 possibly in Lunenburg County) and his sister Millie HAWKINS (b. before 1765 also possibly in Lunenburg County). Joshua married "Suckey" in early 1780 in Lunenburg County by a Rev. James Shelbin and witnessed by Ro(w)land, who previously married Millie, time and place uncertain. Ro(w)land served in the Revolutionary War, initially entering ~10 January 1781 in Lunenburg County, Virginia under a Capt. Frank Degraffenreiel(sp), later joining a regiment in Petersburg under Col. Merryweather and Maj. Cloman(sp); was discharged and later re-entered in July 1781 under Capt. Robertson, Maj. Street(sp.?Strict) and Col. Stokes, subsequently assigned to a regiment under the command of Col. Campbell and involved in the siege of Yorktown. He was discharged after Cornwallis's surrender and returned to Lunenburg County. Joshua served as a private in the Capt. James Johnson's company of Col. Mordecai Buckner's 6th Regiment Virginia Line; severely wounded and captured during the battle of Brandywine and taken prisoner for 2 years. Released 10 February 1778. Both families moved, probably together, to Spartanburg, S.C. about 1783. Their grandchildren, Hamilton JOHNSON and Millberry HAWKINS married and it is from them that I am tied into all of this. I am attempting to find Ro(w)land's parents and lineage as I have been fortunate to trace the Hawkins's line to 1400s England. If you can help, it would be appreciated.
