Russell, Michael Reed (1945-2003)

ELWOOD, Kan. ---- Michael Reed Russell, 58, Elwood, formerly St. Joseph, passed away Thursday, Nov. 20, 2003, at a Kansas City, Mo., hospital.

Mr. Russell was employed as a carpenter superintendent for the Russell Construction Co. in Conroe, Texas. He was a veteran of the Army.

Born in St. Joseph on June 6, 1945, he had lived most of his life there. He was a graduate of Benton High School.

Mr. Russell was a member of the Carpenter's Union Local No. 1145. "Mike" was a man of many interests and talents. He was a race car driver and raced at tracks in the four-state area. He shared his life and talents by being a tour guide at the Weston, Mo., distillery and as a pilot of river barges. He was a collector of antique toys and Mickey Mouse.

"Mike" enjoyed reading and traveling; and he gained a great deal of knowledge from these sources. He never met a stranger; and he was a friend to all who crossed his path. He was an interesting person to visit with and always put others before himself.

He married Jackie Krause, the mother of his children; and was later divorced.

Mr. Russell was preceded in death by his father, Norman R. Russell.

Surviving: son, Michael R. Russell, Elwood; daughter, Ericka Russell, Elwood; mother, Josephine Russell, Elwood; eight brothers, Donald, Amazonia, Mo.; John C. Montgomery, Texas; Ray, Floresville, Texas; Jimmy Dale, Bill and Bo Russell, all of St. Joseph; Sherrill, Elwood; and Timothy Russell, Faucett, Mo., and three sisters, Peggy L. Bryson, Las Vegas, Nev.; Linda Clark, Bella Vista, Ark.; and Sally Ann Hubbard, Los Osos, Calif.

Service: 2 p.m. Monday, Rupp Funeral Home, St. Joseph. Burial: Bellemont Cemetery, Wathena, Kan. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Michael Russell Children's Education Fund in care of the Pony Express Community Bank, Elwood.
