Holzhauser, Alpha N. C. (1914-2007)

Alpha "Al" N. C. Holzhauser, 92, St. Joseph, passed away March 24, 2007, at his home. Al was born April 18, 1914, in Wathena, Kan. He was a 1934 graduate of Wathena High School and attended Baker University. Mr. Holzhauser was co-owner of Coachlight Enterprises and K & H Mobile Home Company. He was a member of the King Hill Methodist Church and a charter member and past president of the Eastside Optimist Club. Al was a master craftsman and builder of muzzle-loading percussion and flintlock rifles. He was a member of the Grand River Muzzle Loader and the Missouri Archeological Society. In 1950 he shot a deer with a black powder rifle, the first person to do so in 100 years. He was also a master great-grandparent, grandfather, father and husband. On May 7, 1938, he married Velma Louise (Lear) Holzhauser in Lansing, Kan. She preceded him in death on Jan 18, 2004.

Also preceding him in death were his parents, Charles and Edith (Curley) Holzhauser; brother, Fred Holzhauser; three sisters, Josephine Russell, Stella Holzhauser and Hazel Schubert. Survivors include his daughter, Lois and husband Dr. Richard Markley, Cleveland, Mo.; grandchildren, Dr. Jill Louise Dickerson and husband Dr. Daniel Dickerson, Eudora, Kan.; great-grandchildren, Madeline Jean and Camille Marie Dickerson, Eudora; and Jane Grace and Ella Louise Markley, Overland Park.

A private family inurnment will be held at Bellemont Cemetery, Wathena, followed by a memorial service at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, St. Joseph. The family will receive friends following the service until 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions to the Eastside Optimist Club of St. Joseph or a charity of the donor's choice.
